Prepping Your Nails for Surgery: Removing Products
Essential Nail Product Removals
Before undergoing surgery, it is crucial to remove all nail products, including:
Regular Polish and Gel Polish
Remove all traces of regular nail polish or gel polish to prevent their interference with medical monitoring or treatment.
Artificial Nails
Artificial nails, such as acrylics or gels, should also be removed to ensure optimal patient safety and care during surgery.
Thorough Removal
Ensure that there is no leftover nail paint or treatment remaining on your nails, as it may interfere with medical procedures and hinder proper monitoring.
Additional Precautions
Body Piercings, Makeup, and Bathing
In addition to removing nail products, you will need to follow other preoperative instructions, including removing body piercings, makeup, and taking a bath or shower to minimize the risk of infection and facilitate medical assessments.
Pulse Oximetry
In most cases, acrylic nails do not pose a problem for pulse oximetry monitoring. However, removing at least two acrylic nails, one on each hand, is recommended to ensure accurate pulse oximetry readings.
Failure to Remove Acrylics
Failure to remove acrylic nails before surgery may result in the need to reschedule the procedure for your safety and the well-being of others.
