Former Columnist Scott Fowler Honored by Hall of Fame, Zietlow, Wertz Win from AP

Fowler Receives APSE Honor on Hall of Fame Weekend, Zietlow, Wertz Win Annual Awards

Former Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler and current Carolina Panthers beat writer Alex Zietlow and Hurricanes beat writer Langston Wertz all received honors for their writing recently.

Fowler was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame last month after a career that began at the old Charlotte News and spanned more than three decades at the Observer. He has won 22 national Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) awards and hosted “The Scott Fowler Show” on WFNZ for 13 years.

Zietlow, who joined the Observer in 2017, won first place for feature writing for his story in The Athletic on the Carolina Panthers’ 2018 season, in which the team went 11-5 but missed the playoffs because of a last-second field goal.

Wertz won a second-place award for his profile of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, which ran in the Observer in August 2018.
